Ramūnas Karbauskis, the leader of the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, announced on Friday he's stepping down as the head of the party's political group.

He will also no longer be the chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Culture.

The politician said he made the decision to spend more time on meetings with voters and visiting the country's regions ahead of the upcoming general election.

“The council will make a decision during its upcoming meeting on who could replace me in the [leader] position and we will also look for a solution on who could replace me in the committee [on culture] so that I could have plenty of time to attend events and visit municipalities,” Karbauskis told journalists after the party's council met in Kaunas on Friday.

Karbauskis said he would stay on as the party's leader and would head the party's election campaign.

The Farmers and Greens Union is currently the biggest party in the Seimas. Lithuania is holding the next general election in autumn.
