Opera singer and Venice Biennale winners among nominees for Lithuanian arts prize

Twelve nominees have been selected for the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, the Culture Ministry announced on Friday. The list includes opera singer Asmik Grigorian, film director Algimantas Puipa and the trio of artists behind Lithuania's award-winning pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė and Lina Lapelytė.

The nominees have been picked by the Commission of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts from 40 candidates proposed by the public.

Six of the 12 will be awarded with the prize. Their names will be announced at a press conference on December 16.

The shortlist also includes art researcher Giedrė Jankevičiūtė, composer Zita Bružaitė, filmmaker Giedrė Beinoriūtė, actors Viktorija Kuodytė and Dainius Svobonas, painters Henrikas Čerapas and Konstantinas Eugenijus Šatūnas, opera singer Edgaras Montvidas and writer Saulius Šaltenis.

The awards recognise significant culture and achievements by Lithuanian creators and those representing the Lithuanian World Community over the past seven years, as well as works of art, crated over the course of life.

The winners receive a monetary prize of 30,400 euros.
