Marius Vaščega, a lawyer and economist, will head the office of Lithuania's European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius who is responsible for environment and oceans.
For the past two years, Vaščega has been deputy head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania where he worked since 2014. Prior to that, he worked at the European Parliament and the EU Council, and had a legal practice before Lithuania joined the EU.
Sinkevičius started work with the newly appointed European Commission, headed by Ursula von der Leyen, on December 1. European commissioners usually pick officials from their home countries to lead their officers.
Diplomat Arūnas Vinčiūnas led the office of Lithuania's previous European Commissioner Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis.
