Lithuanian Transport Minister Jaroslav Narkevič, who has been criticised by the president, says he is the target of “an organised discrediting campaign” and does not intend to step down.

“At the moment, I don't intend [to resign]. Because a campaign to discredit me has been underway,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Narkevič, who has become transport minister last August, has come under fire for firing the management board of Lietuvos Paštas (Lithuanian Post), for his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates and other issues.

The minister said he had not discussed the issue of resigning with Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis recently.

President Gitanas Nausėda said earlier on Wednesday that he would make a decision on the embattled transport minister “in the very near future”.

Narkevič was nominated for the post of transport minister by the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance which joined the government coalition after last summer's presidential election.
