Lithuanian-led EU’s Cyber Rapid Reaction Team (CRRT) is preparing for its first rotation to protect the union’s cyberspace as part of the EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO).

The team, which includes experts from Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, and Lithuania, trained to carry out defensive cybersecurity operations – assess hostile actions in cyberspace, detect and identify cyber threats, prevent and neutralise potential cyber attacks.

“Just a year ago, we were still deciding whether such a force can be used in practice, but today we have a team [which] is training in full force,” Lithuanian Defence Vice Minister Edvinas Kerza told reporters in Brussels on Friday.

During the Amber Mist 2019 cyber drills on November 11-22 in Lithuania, over 100 experts from the EU, Georgia, Lithuania, the US, and Ukraine trained alongside the cyber reaction team, according to the Lithuanian Defence Ministry press release.

Experts from the Italian Armed Forces and Finland's Defence Ministry took part as observers.

The CRRT is preparing for its first rotation in 2020 when it will be placed on stand-by to react to cyber incidents across the EU.

Lithuanian Defence Vice Minister Kerza stressed that the cyber teams could be used not only by the EU, but also its partners.
