The Lithuanian Basketball Federation has appointed Darius Maskoliūnas, assistant coach of Žalgiris Kaunas, to lead the national men's basketball team.
One member of the federation's executive committee voted for Antanas Sireika, coach of BC Šiauliai, and 13 for Maskoliūnas.
For the past five years Maskoliūnas has served as assistant coach of Žalgiris' Šaruūas Jasikevičius. In 2013-2016, he also served as an assistant to Jonas Kazlauskas in the national men's basketball team.
Maskoliūnas is facing his first test in February when the national team will compete in the EuroBasket 2021 qualifiers. The biggest challange will come later, when the Lithuanian team will try top the qualification in a bid to secure a favourable position in the Tokyo Olympics.
