The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has been the target of a cyber attack after a fake news report was circulated in its name on Friday.
The false message, sent from the ministry's email address, alleged that the US was planning to build a military base in Lithuania that would host US nuclear weapons transferred from the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey.
“The Department of Communication and Cultural Diplomacy [of the Lithuanian MFA] has not circulated a press release about plans to establish a US military base in Lithuania,” the ministry said in a statement on Friday. “It is likely to have been part of a complex cyber-information attack. Responsible institutions are investigating the event.”
Institutions in Lithuania are now trying to determine whether the cyber incident was a hacking attack.
"We will find out much later [whether it was a hacking attack]," Laimis Bratikas from the Lithuanian military StratCom centre told LRT ENglish. "We are assuming that [the attack] was coordinated."
