Lithuanian poet Brazdžionis' archive auctioned at 2.5m US dollars

A personal archive of Bernardas Brazdžionis, a prominent Lithuanian poet and literary critic, is being auctioned at 2.5m US dollars, Draugas.org has reported.

According to the online news site, the archive contains his handwritten poems, letters, personal photographs and other documents.

Culture Minister Mindaugas Kvietkauskas says the asking price is too much for Lithuania.

"Two and a half million dollars for eight [documents] would be a huge amount [...] It exceeds the annual budget of some public bodies," Kvietkauskas told LRT TV over the weekend.

"Thus, it is really hard to imagine how we could bid in the auction under such terms," he added.

The poet's archive was found in a storage facility nobody had paid the rent for for a while.

The owner of the archive is an American man who speaks no Lithuanian. He refused to give his name.

Brazdžionis died in the US at the age of 96 in 2002.
