Lithuania's Migration Department jammed with bogus e-registration bookings

Lithuania's Migration Department says its system has been jammed by employment intermediaries who fill up appointment slots with bogus bookings.

The new problem came into light after the department introduced an e-registration system to reduce queuing times, the reported on Friday.

"The queues are formed by intermediaries when they reserve multiple time slots" to service their customers, said the head of the Migration Department, Evelina Gudzinskaite.

"It’s now difficult to reserve [a day in advance], therefore, they decided to book fake times, she added. When the intermediatery finds out when the foreigner is coming, he or she is then allocated one of the multiple pre-booked slots.

Therefore, members of staff at the Migration Department need to regularly review bookings and delete the fake ones. "For example, we once deleted 200 fake bookings in Kaunas, and also regularly delete dozens of them in Vilnius," she said.

Hauliers are angered by the new rules and say it provided no time to get necessary permits done for drivers coming from other countries.

Lithuanian transport firms, which hire an increasing number of drivers from Ukraine and other non-EU states, claim the new rules do not provide enough time to secure temporary residence permits for their drivers.
