Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda is going to Latvia on Tuesday to discuss joint infrastructure projects with the neighbouring country's leaders.

Nausėda said in a press release on Monday that “Lithuania and Latvia share the same approach to challenges and threats”, which “leads to successful bilateral cooperation when dealing with regional issues and defending the interests of people of the two countries on the international arena”.

The Lithuanian leader is scheduled to meet with President Egils Levits, Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece and Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš.

The meetings will focus on “bilateral relations, and positions on shared goals in the EU and NATO as well as defence and security issues, strategic transport infrastructure projects Via Baltica and Rail Baltica and joint energy projects”, according to the press release.

In Riga, Nausėda will lay flowers at the Freedom Monument and visit the National Library of Latvia to be shown a collection of rare and valuable books.

He will also donate a book about the history of the Palace of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes in Vilnius' lower castle complex.

Nausėda is also to meet with the Lithuanian expatriate community in Riga.

This is the new president's second foreign visit after he was sworn in a week and a half ago. It follows his trip to Poland last week.
