Lithuanian parliament votes down motion to weaken MPs' immunity from prosecution

BNS 2019.07.16 17:00

The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, has rejected a proposal to narrow down legal immunity enjoyed by MPs, judges, the prime minister and government ministers.

More than half of parliamentarians, including Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, had drafted constitutional amendments allowing to prosecute a member of the Seimas, a judge, a minister and the prime minister without consent from the Seimas or the president, in case they are suspected of having committed a serious crime.

The proposal was rejected in a vote of 35 to 16, with 40 abstentions.
