Some 150 Portuguese soldiers arrived in Klaipėda on Wednesday, where they were formally welcomed at the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion of the Motorized Infantry Brigade 'Žemaitija'.

The Portuguese soldiers will be based in the barracks of Butigeidis Battalion in Klaipėda and will train mainly with the host battalion's soldiers. The brigade incorporating Butigeidis Battalion was established in 2016 in response to the growing security challanges in the region.

This rotation is unrelated to the Rukla-based multinational NATO battalion.

The previous Portuguese rotational force, a marine company, was deployed in Lithuania in the spring of 2018. Portugal has been sending rotational forces to Lithuania since the summer of 2015.

Rotational forces from Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, the US, Poland, Luxembourg, Hungary and Germany have trained in Lithuania so far since the spring of 2014, following increased measures after the annexation of Crimea.
