Lithuanian border guards are leaving on Friday to join Operation Themis in Central Mediterranean.
The operation is aimed at supporting Italy with border control, surveillance and search and rescue in the Central Mediterranean, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on Thursday.
18 Lithuanian border guards will join the Frontex operation as of July 1, split into three shifts that will change on a monthly basis.
The Lithuanian border guards and their vessel will be stationed in Trapani, Sicily.
Lithuanian border guards have taken part in similar operations in the Mediterranean Sea in 2010-2012, and last year, VSAT representatives took part in the Poseidon 2018 operation in Lesbos, Greece.
