Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference called on its members to refrain from political agitation, after priests have increasingly used social media to voice their political opinions.
The controversy began when a dissident priest, Robertas Grigas, wrote on Facebook: “Saulius Skvernelis’ collective farm kolkhoz [sic] lost, but Ingrida [Šimonytė’s] gay night club could win. Although, Gitanas [Nausėda’s] bank is better”.
Other priests used social media to agitate against Ingirda Šimonyte for her alleged ‘ultra-liberal’ views.
Lithuania is due to vote in the second round of presidential election on May 26.
