Kaunas city looks for a building to blow up

BNS 2019.05.11 16:00

Kaunas, Lithuania’s second largest city, is looking for an abandoned building to blow up in a way to celebrate becoming European Capital of Culture in 2022.

“We think it would be very meaningful to mark the Capital of Culture in a destructive way,” said Ana Čižauskienė, international relations and programming director for Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022.

Kaunas is aiming to put an end to the previous era, when the city was abandoned, asleep, and unloved, Čižauskienė told BNS.

In January 20-22, 2022, Kaunas will kick off its European Capital of Culture programme with a city-wide ‘Pabusk, žvėrie’ (‘Wake up, animal’) parade. This way, Kaunas’ citizens are called on to seek out the mythical Kaunas’ animal.

Alongside it, an abandoned building might be blown sky high, or destructed in other ways, according to Čižauskienė.
