Lithuanian PM names possible successors in case he wins presidency

Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, who is running for president, has indicated whom he sees as his successor to head the government, should he be successful in the upcoming election in May.

Skvernelis said on Tuesday that, as president, he would nominate Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis, Economy Minister Virginijus Sinkevičius or Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas to be the new prime minister.

He noted, however, that he would not be able to make the decision alone, since the parliament would have to approve the candidate.

“I would suggest to the ruling coalition to consider Matijošaitis, Sinkevičius and Vaičiūnas as candidates who could carry on the government's work for a year and a half and implement this government's programme,” Skvernelis told reporters.

The latest poll by Vilmorus suggests that Skvernelis, of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, is favoured by 16.7 percent of the voters and is behind the conservative candidate Ingrida Šimonytė and Gitanas Nausėda, an independent.

Nine candidates are running for president in the election on May 12. If no one receives 50 percent of the vote, two frontrunners will advance to a run-off vote on May 26.
