Lithuanian ambassador will not go back to Moscow 2019.04.18 13:02

Remigijus Motuzas, Lithuania's ambassador to Russia, will not return to Moscow until further notice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.

The ministry recalled Motuzas for consultations last week. He had been questioned as a special witness in an investigation into suspected visa fraud.

The ministry also said that the ambassador was recalled to Vilnius because of threats against the Moscow embassy.

Motuzas, who has not been charged with misconduct, is named in an investigation involving Rimantas Šidlauskas, a former diplomat and a business association head suspected of influence peddling. Šidlauskas allegedly used his connections to secure a Schengen visa for the Russian businessman Rinat Nasirov, also a suspect in the investigation.

Lithuania's Foreign Ministry also said that its embassy in Moscow received threats after a court in Vilnius convicted several Russian nationals for involvement in a 1991 Soviet operation which left 14 dead, the so-called January 13 case.
