Over tenth of Lithuanians face deep poverty

BNS2019.04.12 10:54

One in nine people in Lithuania lived in deep poverty last year, national statistics show, a number that grew from the year before.

Around 310,000 people, or 11.1 percent of the population, lived in material deprivation, up by 1.3 percentage points from 2017, according to the latest figures from Lithuania's statistics office, Statistics Lithuania, released on Friday.

That means that a tenth of the population lacked means to adequately provide for themselves in at least four out of six areas of basic needs used to measure poverty.

Poverty was almost equally widespread among urban and rural populations, 11.1 and 11.2 percent respectively.

In Lithuania's major cities, the share of people in material hardship stood at 8.6 percent, but was much higher in other towns, 15.1 percent on average.

The elderly, people over 65, were more likely to face poverty than any other age group, while those between 25 and 49 were least exposed to material deprivation.
