Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė says the country has as many security guarantees as needed, amid chiefs of Defence of the three Baltic States having sent a letter to Commander of the US European Command General Philip Breedlove, asking to deploy a brigade-sized unit in the region.

Spokesman for the Lithuanian Armed Forces told media that the letter was sent on Friday.

However, Lithuanian President appeared to be moderate as she commented on the letter while participating in the Armed Forces festival for the people of Marijampolė City, on Sunday.

Grybauskaitė said that Lithuania has as many security guarantees as needed, and she said the country is not pleading for anything, but talking about threats.

The three Baltic countries aim to have a battalion-sized unit permanently deployed in each of the countries, and they would together form a brigade. This is described as a deterrent in response to Russia‘s actions in the region.

A brigade-sized unit usually consists of 2,000-3,000 troopers.

The three Baltic nations have been each hosting a company of US troops – about 150 – since last year. Other Allies are also sending their soldiers for exercises to the region, though not on a regular basis.
