A state of emergency has been declared in Lithuanian western municipalities due to ice jams and rising waters.

A state of emergency has been declared in Lithuanian western municipalities due to ice jams and rising waters.

Today emergency has been declared in Pagegiai municipality, earlier it was declared in the neighbouring Silute municipality.

The army will be asked to provide an amphibian vehicle to get access to households in flooded areas. Ice jams are not abating and freezing water is impeding access to homesteads.

According to administration of Pagegiai, 21 homesteads with 72 people are now cut off. Level of water has come up to a half of a metre.

An unexpected flood started in the very last days of the past year, due to a significant rise in temperatures and accumulation of floes. It is not expected the flood to outgo, throughout this week.
