The Lithuanian Central Electoral Commission has cleared nine candidates to run in May's presidential election.

It named Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, currently a European commissioner, philosopher Arvydas Juozaitis, MEP Valentinas Mazuronis, economist Gitanas Nausėda, MP Mindaugas Puidokas, MP Naglis Puteikis, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, MP Ingrida Šimonytė and MEP Valdemar Tomaševski as presidential candidates on Tuesday.

They will be officially granted the status of presidential candidates, which carries immunity from criminal prosecution, on Friday.

Several potential candidates were turned down because they failed to collect 20,000 voter signatures. These were MP Petras Gražulis, Alfonsas Butė, and Kazimieras Juraitis.

Lithuania will hold the first round of presidential elections on May 12, with a runoff scheduled for May 26 if none of the candidates wins an outright majority.
