The LRT Council is the highest decision-making body of the Lithuanian Radio and Television (LRT), and its duty is to ensure the public interest. The Council is composed of the 12 professionals each representing different sphere of activities – social, science and culture.
The LRT Council is formed following the procedure as established in the Law on the Lithuanian Radio and Television. The following procedure applies for the first term of the Council:
4 members for the term of 6 years are appointed by the President of the Republic;
4 members for the term of 4 years – by the Seimas of the Lithuanian Republic (2 members – from the candidates delegated by the Opposition factions);
4 members, in the character of their representatives, for the term of 2 years from the Research Council of Lithuania, the Education Council of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Artistic Unions’ Association and Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference. On expiration of the member’s term, the institution (organisation) delegating its representative to the Council appoints a new member for the term of 6 years.
The formation of the LRT Council is organised by the Seimas committee on Education, Science and Culture. The Committee convokes the first meeting of the Council, where the Council members, by simple majority of votes, elect the Chairman of the Council, for the term of 3 years.
